The BYU Cougars Hockey Team began in 1996 when a group of BYU Students got together and expressed a desire to play intercollegiate hockey within the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Although BYU declined to sanction the team at that time, this dedicated group of students gained the support of BYU faculty sponsors and formed the Provo Ice Cats Hockey Team. The Ice Cats persisted in their quest to play intercollegiate hockey and eventually gained admission to the ACHA on a temporary basis by agreeing to comply with all academic, financial, and organizational standards of the league as if they were a BYU approved team.
From 1996 until 2005, BYU student athletes proudly donned the Provo Ice Cats jersey and effectively competed against 40+ other major university hockey teams in the Western Division of the ACHL. The Ice Cats regularly ranked in the Top 10 in the West and narrowly missed earning a berth at the National Tournament on several occasions. Although not a BYU sanctioned team, these dedicated BYU student athletes built a strong BYU student fan base and gained recognition in the Utah Valley sports community as a mainstay family entertainment activity.
After more than a decade of playing as a non-affiliated team, the Provo Ice Cats’ repeated efforts to become formally affiliated with the BYU Sports Community were finally successful, and in 2006 the BYU Cougars Hockey Team became the newest BYU intercollegiate sports team. Now entering its fourth year as the BYU Cougars Hockey Team, the team is proud to represent BYU, the LDS Church, and the student-body and is determined to become one of the premier teams in the ACHA.
